Setting parametric limits on dialectal variation in Spanish*
نویسنده
چکیده
The present investigation departs from the perspective that dialects of languages may exemplify typological distinctions, and as such, may be defined within parametric limits. More specifically, this synchronic study focuses on the interand intra-dialectal variation attested within the Spanish language, heretofore exempted from the scrutiny that has characterized syntactic studies of other Romance languages. The analysis of said variability, which centers on the licensing of null and overt subjects, reveals intralingual differences that serve to bolster syntactic-theoretical argumentation and corroborate the structures and principles of the Minimalist program.

It is well known that canonical Spanish, the dialectal variant ‘central’ of Spain, so called Castilian, can be transcribed by rules. This paper deals with the automatic grapheme to phoneme transcription rules in several Spanish dialects from Latin America. Spanish rhythm has been traditionally classified as syllabletimed. Recent rhythm metrics have been employed to reconsider this typology in terms of differences in vocalic and consonantal variation. Several cross-dialectal studies have begun to uncover differences in rhythm within a given language. Yet research on differences in Spanish rhythm has not been conducted. In this paper, Peruvian Span...
متن کاملA Kernel Independence Test for Geographical Language Variation
Quantifying the degree of spatial dependence for linguistic variables is a key task for analyzing dialectal variation. However, existing approaches have important drawbacks. First, they are based on parametric models of dependence, which limits their power in cases where the underlying parametric assumptions are violated. Second, they are not applicable to all types of linguistic data: some app...

In communication, speakers and listeners need ways to highlight certain information and relegate other information to the background. This knowledge and its layout in the utterance is commonly referred to as information...
